Yantra de Vilder

Professional

I am a composer and sound artist. I create music for pictures and people. I’ve worked with circuses, film directors, pop singers, and choirs. My music has been heard on the BBC, ABC, SBS, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic (amongst other weird and wonderful places). I’ve also collaborated with many leaders in the Australian arts community including Robyn Archer, the Australian Dance Theatre, and David Helfgott.

Education

I attended a Rudolf Steiner school in my primary years where a great emphasis was placed on the creative and spiritual development of the child. My secondary years were at Abbotsleigh, a private school for girls in Sydney. I completed a B.A in contemporary music at Southern Cross University and an M.A. in Contemporary Music at Macquarie University. I also have a Certificate IV in workplace training.

Growing Up

Music and the arts were always a strong influence in our family - I’ve been playing some kind of instrument for as long as I can remember. My first love was the grand piano which slowly morphed into a fascination with anything that contained a keyboard - be it acoustic or electronic.

Early Years

I studied piano and violin from an early age, and then I discovered the joys of pop music, my influences ranging from Joni Mitchell to Led Zepplin, later moving towards Laurie Anderson , Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel and Lisa Gerard. I can remember many musical evenings around the family piano, and the cultural environment that my parents fostered by the many musical soirrees at the our home with the likes of Yehudi Menuhin and the classical pianist John Champ.
